A bag with an iPhone and house keys, recovered at Istanbul Airport and delivered to the Netherlands
A small crossbody bag found airside, shipped to the Netherlands, and then reported as possibly lost by the carrier after a missed delivery. What we could do at that point, what we could not, and why the case ended at a pickup point rather than a front door.
What happened
A traveller contacted us after leaving a small black crossbody bag at Istanbul Airport. Inside were an iPhone and her house keys. The bag had been found in the international airside area and registered under a reference with the lost-property office.
We collected it, checked the contents against her description, and packed it for an international shipment to the Netherlands.
Where it went wrong, and what we did
The parcel reached the Netherlands quickly. The first delivery attempt failed because she was at work — ordinary enough. Several days later the carrier reported that the shipment might be lost.
At that point what we could do was limited but specific: we opened an investigation with the carrier straight away, kept checking its location, and kept her informed of each answer. We do not control a carrier’s network; we can make sure a missing parcel is being looked for and that the owner is not left guessing.
The parcel was found and moved to one of the carrier’s pickup points, where she collected it.
