Lost Ring at Istanbul Airport: How We Recovered It and Returned It to Texas
Robert contacted us from the United States after a ring had been found at Istanbul Airport and classified as an “Annotated Product.” Because the item was valuable jewelry and was being held under airport customs procedures, recovering it was more complicated than arranging a standard lost-property pickup. Robert wanted to understand whether he needed to work through the Turkish Consulate in the United States and, more importantly, how the ring could eventually be collected in Istanbul and returned safely to his home in Texas.
We reviewed the case carefully, clarified which person was officially registered as the owner, and helped Robert prepare for the authorization required by the airport and Customs. Once the necessary documents were completed through the Turkish Consulate and submitted to the Lost & Found Office, our representative returned to Istanbul Airport and successfully collected the ring. We then verified an identifying engraving with Robert, prepared the ring for international transport, supported the customs declaration with travel records showing it was a left-behind personal belonging, and handed the shipment to UPS Express. A few days later, Robert confirmed that the ring had arrived safely at his home in Texas.
I lost a ring at Istanbul Airport. Can someone collect it for me?
Yes, but valuable jewelry can require a different procedure from ordinary lost property. If the ring is being held in a customs-controlled area, the airport may require formal authorization before releasing it to another person or courier.
What does “Annotated Product” mean at Istanbul Airport Lost & Found?
In some lost-property cases, valuable items such as jewelry, cash or certain electronics may receive additional attention from Customs. This can mean that ordinary authorization forms are not enough and further documentation may be required before collection. In Robert’s case, the ring could only be released after the necessary authorization had been completed.
How much did it cost to return a ring from Istanbul Airport to the US?
For this case, the total cost was $140, including airport collection, secure packaging, required shipment preparation and UPS delivery to the US.
